Downloadable Content

Both RB and GH3 promised one thing: lots and lots of downloadable content. And for good reason: the dang DVD can only hold so much, and honestly, there’s serious cash in downloading new stuff. Why’s that? Fewer costs, mainly. If you can just have people download your material that means you don’t have to pay to physically produce discs, ship them, and a plethora of other monumentally-expensive things.

RB has more work to put out because they need more than just the guitar and bass to deal with. So it should come as a bit of a surprise to those who don’t have both games already or haven’t looked at the prices on either Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network, they may shock you. Everything for RB is cheaper than GH3, and there’s much more to buy too.

As of this article’s release, RB has released 20 single tracks and six packs of three tracks. The singles cost either $1.99 or $0.99, and the packs cost $5.49 each. That’s 160, 80 and 440 Microsoft Points, respectively. Five of the six packs are songs from specific bands, ie three songs from the Foo Fighters or Metallica, and the last is based on genre. Finally, in conjunction with Xbox Magazine, there will be 3 exclusive tracks on the February issue's demo disc.

Guitar Hero 3's all about making the walk-of-fame and taking down those impossible riffs.

GH3 currently has three packs (also of three songs each) and three single tracks. Packs cost $6.25 and single tracks are $2.49 (500 and 200 MSP respectively), which is substantially higher. Activision has also released a few free songs and a promotional pack for buying the GH3 soundtrack. The pack releases are mainly from specific bands, but there are only three packs to look at right now, so it isn't enough to reign judgment on.

Even with nearly a month head start, GH3 has fallen behind in the downloadable content game. RB has cheaper tracks, more popular music, and more of it. Plus you can play any part of the song too, not just the guitar.

Winner: Rock Band destroys the competition! With a huge download list, lower prices and new weekly downloads, Guitar Hero 3 is put to epic shame.
