The Force Unleashed Is Only So-So, Reviews Say

The reviews for the greatly anticipated title The Force Unleashed are coming in, and coming in around average. Xbox Magazine gave it a 7.5 out of 10, saying it lacked polish. And horror of horrors, Nintendo Power said playing with the Wii motion controls is not that fun.

Do you have any idea how many gamers probably bought a Wii just for the chance to swing controls like a lightsaber? Electronic Gaming Monthly's review is particularly scathing. James Mielke says the whole thing feels like a "mediocre action game from 1999."

It's sad, as gamers and Star Wars fans alike were looking forward to this one. We may have to keep waiting for that Star Wars game that really makes us feel like we've unleashed the force.

Microsoft Hopes Price Cuts Appeal to PS2 Owners

Posted by Brian Allen  3 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes ago.

Xbox marketing product director Aaron Greenberg told MTV's Multiplayer blog that the company believes its price cuts hit on two fronts. Greenberg thinks a $199 price point can pick up gamers who already own a Wii. He also believes it can pick up PS2 owners who haven't stepped up to the next generation.

"Tens of millions of those guys haven't upgraded," Greenberg said. "A lot of those guys didn't pay more than $200 for their system and now we're speaking to those guys as well."

The article notes that for all the success of the Wii, it hasn't reached the popularity the PS2 still enjoys. It will be interesting to see which console camp a majority of the "upgraders" land in.

EA May Walk Away from Take-Two Deal

Another day, another rumor where a potential EA-Take Two merger is concerned. Stock site Seeking Alpha reports on what it calls an unusual change of shares.

The site learned the price drop of Take-Two shares stemmed from reports that the on-again, off-again merger talks between Take-Two and EA are off again. Both companies had been engaged in private talks after numerous deadlines EA had set in hostile takeover attempts expired.

The rumors about EA walking away caused Take-Two shares to drop from $24.51 to $21.34 per share. The way these talks have gone though, it would be impossible to conclusively say things are over.

Tecmo Rejects Square, May Merge With Koei

Posted by Brian Allen  3 days, 19 hours, 24 minutes ago.

Reuters reports that Tecmo has let Square Enix's takeover bid expire and instead appears ready to merge with Koei. Tecmo execs say Koei has a "greater chance of boosting corporate value" than Square Enix. Really?

Um, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts on one hand. Dynasty Warriors and Kessen on the other. Call us biased against Dynasty Warriors, but which one seems more valuable to you, readers?

Square had offered Tecmo $206 million on "friendly" terms to get the deal done. They've not giving up without at least trying their limit break attack on Tecmo. Square says its next step is to learn more about Tecmo's rationale. Then Square will decide how to proceed from there. Stay tuned because this one isn't over.
