Let the face smashing begin.

In 1985 or so I had something of an epiphany.  This was not due to any religious experience or my deciding to quit drinking (I was like sixteen after all) or anything like that.  No, this came from playing a little arcade game called Karate Champ.  It was my first experience with a martial arts fighting game and I was immediately hooked.  Now, twenty two years later, I am still hooked.  The games have evolved considerably since those eight-bit days and today no fighting series defines that evolution quite like Sega's Virtua Fighter.

Seriously, when has kicking someone around ever looked so good?

Virtua Fighter 5 is set to release on the PS3 next month and after taking a good long look at what the game has to offer, I couldn't be more excited.  And if you don't have the green for a PS3, not to worry.  Sega recently announced the game will be headed to the Xbox 360 later this year (quarter 3, to be not quite exact).

Seventeen fighters will face off this time with fifteen of our old favorites returning and two newbies thrown into the mix for fun.  Gamers can take their fighters through four game modes; the expected Arcade and Versus as well as Quest and Dojo.  Arcade and versus are exactly what they sound like - battles against the computer of a friend, while Quest is a return of the RPG inspired mode from VF4.

That is gonna leave a mark.

Dojo mode is a pretty impressive practice session in which the player can choose to learn a character's moves and such in Command or Free modes.  Command runs you through the drills, commanding you to perform a character's moves until they are mastered while Free mode is, well, free and offers up a CPU opponent that will behave the way you wish (according to settings you establish) rather than stand there like a virtual heavy bag like most other fighting games' practice modes.

Playing through and advancing in Quest Mode opens up the ability to grab various upgrades from the Item Shop.  These can be used to trick out your chosen character in numerous ways, bringing a level of customizability never before seen in the series.
