Resistance: Fall of Man

You can expect to employ powerful weaponry, which adds a bit of futuristic spice to your gaming experience. Weapons such as the Auger, which fires energy bolts rather than typical ammunition and the Bullseye, which has munitions that can home in on its target, are just a couple of the armaments that separate Resistance: Fall of Man from your typical first person shooter. Just so you know there are MANY more you’ll utilize.

The Chimera really, really need a dental plan.

The goal is simple: Fight your way through hordes of Chimera, while aiding your fellow soldiers and surviving some horrific firefights. Along the way, you’ll get some nicely done cut-scenes, with still photos and voice acting that, at the very least, is capable. Even with all the trimmings that come with a quality offering, you might expect a game play experience that offers a lot of diversity. That’s not really the case here.

Thankfully though, you have the ability to jump behind the wheel of some powerful vehicles, which does help relieve the monotony of constantly being on foot. Beyond this, your focus is single-minded and in that respect Resistance: Fall of Man does offer a strikingly similar game play experience to other offerings in the genre. Of course, it is worth noting that only a handful of first person shooters have been successful on the PS2 platform. With the emergence of the more powerful PS3, this title seems to be an indication that Sony wants to prove its new console will more than meet the challenge when competing with Microsoft and Nintendo.

Throw a grenade and then run!

Graphically, Resistance: Fall of Man is a gritty, yet eye-catching launch title. I’m not going to sugar coat this for you; Gears of War, which is the game by which Resistance: Fall of Man will be judged, is a more polished offering. However, looking back at the launch of the Xbox 360, I cannot recall a shooter that offered up as much fun and aesthetic appeal as PS3’s flagship launch title. Even Call of Duty 2 with its polished graphics didn’t quite capture this level of next generation appeal.

What can be said about the sound effects that haven’t already been mentioned in reviews of previously released war games? If you like the echo of gunfire, rocket blasts and explosions you won’t be disappointed. However, you won’t find anything in this department that really pushes the PS3’s capabilities and I expect that around this time next year we’ll see titles similar to Resistance: Fall of Man, which will offer up improved graphics and sound.
