Resistance: Fall of Man

Could this be shooter of the year, or will that title go to the Xbox 360's Gears of War?

After years of conjecture, anticipation and most recently astonishment, the North American and Japanese PS3s are now in the hands of a few faithful gamers as well as EBay profiteers. The latter group not-withstanding, the former is enjoying the first polished first person shooter to grace a Sony branded console in years.

This thing is hungry…and you’re the perfect snack.

Resistance: Fall of Man is the day-one killer-app developed by Ted Pryce and Insomniac. These are the talented individuals behind the extolled Ratchet and Clank series. Having taken a brief break from their legendary platformer, Insomniac has tackled a new genre and set it in a gritty, dismal world that is all too reminiscent of World War II, but with an other-worldly twist.

The game puts you in the role of Sergeant Nathan Hale, an American solider that joins the British resistance force.. Instead of battling Hitler and the Third Reich, mankind has united to combat a more lethal and merciless alien race known as the Chimera. These sickly colored beasts are intent upon destroying the human race and as the old saying goes...”You are mankind’s last hope.”

For all of you who saw that film, this is what happens after the 28th day.

From a game play perspective, Resistance: Fall of Man plays out much like any other first person World War era video game. Alien enemies aside, this could easily be mistaken for Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc. Your fearless character will maneuver his way through war torn streets, replete with burning vehicles, decaying buildings and fallen comrades. Where you’ll begin to notice a divergence from the typical shooter is in the weapons. Our side isn’t limited to just the M5A2 rifles in this alternate world.
