After what was universally hailed as the top Xbox 360 launch title last year, Call of Duty 3 attempts to re-create the same success that its predecessor Call of Duty 2 enjoyed on Microsoft’s console. Considering the lack of serious competition that Call of Duty 2 faced, it was easy to make that judgment.
With the launch of the PS3, the competition will be much stiffer. While Sony is touting Resistance: Fall of Man as “the launch title to have”, Activision and Treyarch are quietly asking, “What about us?” What about us, indeed. With the hullabaloo surrounding Insomniac’s excellent shooter, it might be easy for gamers to brush Call of Duty 3 under the rug. That would be a huge mistake.
Get your marching orders and off you go.
In fact, those who do not pick up the latest entry in this venerated series will be missing a quality experience. While it lacks the sci-fi weaponry found in Resistance: Fall of Man, gamers can expect a polished and fun experience with Call of Duty 3.
Graphically, Activision and Treyarch have somehow managed to surpass the excellent visuals of Call of Duty 2. Lush outside environments and nicely textured buildings give the game an extra touch of realism. It’s clear that the developer painstakingly added the little details that make a gaming experience so memorable. The only issues I encountered were occasional dips in the frame rate, which is a bit of a let down considering that the PS3 is such a powerful machine.
Sound effects and music are exactly what you have come to expect from such a polished series. The bullets whizzing by and massive explosions will make your teeth rattle, so if you have surround sound you might want to crank it down a few notches to protect your unprepared eardrums. The orchestral music is absolutely top-notch and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back to 1944. Combine all the above with intense chatter from your fellow soldiers and you have the ingredients for an immersive experience.
Saucy red berets and machine guns go together well.
Game play will seem familiar, but not old, to veterans of this first person series. The year is 1944 and you the gamer, as is standard for this series, will take on the role of multiple soldiers and experience the horrors of war through their eyes. Europe is overrun with Nazis and it’s up to you, your fellow soldiers and your trigger finger to help restore order and security to a war ravaged continent.
