Taking down rival family warehouses and "hubs" is where the real money lies, and is the most improved aspect of the game from last generation's systems to the current. On the PS2, for example, you were on your own when going up against one of these locations - which were usually staffed by a veritable army of enemy goons. It was next to impossible to accomplish. Now, with the ability to recruit a crew to assist in such matters, it is much easier and more realistic to take down the rival families' operations and make them your own.
One of the most touted features of The Godfather game was the fact that most of the original cast had returned to deliver their old lines and some new ones for the project. James Caan reprises his role as Sonny, Robert Duval appears as Tom Hagen, Abe Vigoda (who is alive and well, despite rumors that he'd gone ta-ta’s up some years ago, thank you very much) is Tessio and so on. The one key role the developers couldn't cast with the original actor is, unfortunately, the most important: Michael Corleone.
Fisticuffs versus opposing families is still quite satisfying.
Pacino just wouldn't do it. I can only assume that EA offered huge, bulging bags of cash and prizes - since that's how they get pretty much anything they want these days - but the man, for whatever reason, wouldn't bite. The result is a Michael Corleone that looks and sounds like... well, not Michael Corleone. Against all the other original actors (even Brando recorded dialog for the Don before his death) his absence sticks out like a poorly sawed-off 12 gauge.
When comparing all the versions of this game (with the exception of the one for the Wii which I've not had the opportunity to play), this is definitely the best as the graphical upgrades, adjustments to the combat system, new missions, and additional content (there are more warehouses, hubs, rackets and such) make it the version that offers the most bang for the buck. So, if you've not had the opportunity to play The Godfather yet, this is the version to get. If you've played the game on any other system, however, there is no real reason to spend sixty of your favorite dollars on this one, there just isn't enough new and different here for the money.
Highs
Updated graphics; more missions, hubs, warehouses, and different interior environments; the best version of The Godfather game and well worth a look if you haven't played any of the others.
Lows
The third time out this is still the same game as what was released a year ago for last generation systems; weapon targeting is still painfully simple and near broken; without the coolness of the license this would be another watered down GTA clone.
Final Verdict
The Godfather is a good game, not a great game, but a good game. The Godfather: The Don's Edition is worth checking out, but only if you haven't played any earlier version of the game.
