Just when i thought I was out... they pull me back in!
Those who know me know that The Godfather is probably my favorite movie of all time. Of course it's kind of a no-brainer to have the one film that the most film critics and film authorities consider the best film ever made (or maybe that's Citizen Kane? The Godfather ranks high up on the list anyway) as your favorite film of all time, but there it is. Every time I watch it I keep telling Sonny not to stop at that toll booth, but he never listens and gets gunned down anyway. It's the same thing every time.
"We are family... I got all my sisters, erm... brrothers and me..."
That's kind of how I feel about the various versions of The Godfather video game. It seems that every six months or so a new version has come out for a new system, but they're all the same as the one that came out for the Playstation 2 about a year ago. With this latest version, dubbed the Don's Edition, for the Playstation 3, we received a reviewer's guide that detailed the numerous differences between this shiny new Godfather and the versions that came before.
Guess what? It's not different at all - at least not different enough to drop another sixty bucks on.
The first version of The Godfather was well-received enough and, despite some very glaring problems with the combat system and the horrid sameness of the interior environments, was a pretty good game. The Xbox 360 release updated a number of the environments and added a crew recruitment mechanic that the original release could have definitely benefited from. Other than these and some other minor tweaks, it was the same game. Guess what's happened this time? Some minor tweaks here and there have been done, but this is essentially the same game as not just the Xbox 360 version, but as the one that released last year on the "old" systems."
Gunplay is still a key aspect of the game - and the targeting system still makes it way too easy.
That's not to say that this is necessarily a bad thing, however. The original was far from perfect, but it was a good game, especially for fans of the film. This is also a good game. It has to be - it's the same game.
