Even in sections where the transitions are smooth many other bugs creep up. Many times you will miss your button press and see our hero fall to his doom, be crushed, consumed, drowned, or even zapped into ash – the amount of creative ways to perish in the game is astounding. Now normally you are to see an animation of Dirk’s skeleton being reanimated into his old self and you continue from a checkpoint. But instead of that, we find ourselves being fast-forwarded to some scene in the future. It seems to pick a scene at random. Sometimes you are forwarded just one scene, sometimes halfway through the game, making it virtually unplayable if you die.

Many of the features are simply broken as well. There’s an option to turn on arrows to guide you through the game, though they are no where to be found, same with the even smaller onscreen promptings. They often disappeared without any notice, turning the game into little more than a cartoon movie as the interactive portion ceases.

Upon consulting the manual it is said that, “not all features will work properly on all Blu-Ray players”. This seems a bit sloppy and ridiculous for market title. It may be said that on some Blu-Ray players the issues could be less severe, though I wouldn’t count on it. We tested the game on the most common Blu-Ray player on the market, the PS3. We used both the controller and the media remote, and neither provided a good experience.

I would love to report that a favorite from the golden age of gaming has made a triumphant return for our next-gen toys, but I can’t. I can’t even urge fans to pick this one up because of its sheer lack of functionality. There are a few special features such as commentary that will appeal to fans, but the overall experience is such a disappointment that they are hard to enjoy. This is one to stay away from, and let’s hope they finally get it right in the future.
