Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction

From unknown emperors of the universe to robots controlled by fish to invisible time-controlling aliens, nearly everything is made to be overemphasized. Intentional as it was, adults will find the humor childish and children will find it silly to the point of ridiculousness and even old fashioned. The humor is not unlike that of Looney Tunes or other older cartoons, which many kids today may find slow and not action-oriented enough.

All enemies are weak against different guns. Finding their weaknesses can make a world of difference.

To test this theory, I had a few kids play the game at different times to see what their reactions were. They all enjoyed gameplay and found it lots of fun, especially those who played later portions due to more available weapons (after they were all situated with the controls), and they agreed that the game was funny at times, but that they couldn’t follow what the story was about and had little connection to Ratchet whatsoever. Clank, oddly enough, made a good star for the story, but not so much with the gameplay.

They certainly liked the way it looked, and it does look phenomenal. Huge maps with magnificent scenery, enormous backgrounds, and everything highly textured and well lit makes F:ToD look like the latest CGI flick. All this, as well as large interactive environments and the use of far too many weapons to count and it all runs with rare framerate drops, following the hallmark for all PS3 exclusives.

Grinding rails, requires Ratchet to grind hundreds of feet without the slightest push, often uphill, while dodging missiles. The physics is ground-breaking.

The entire adventure lasts around twenty hours, and once completed players can restart on a harder difficulty and keep all their current items. While it is fun for younger kids, adults may find themselves bored with the gameplay, no matter how many times they can watch dinosaurs dancing. Still, the game is almost flawless and is appealing to the whole family, though some more than others.

Highs
Great visuals; huge selection of imaginative weapons; very family oriented.

Lows
Stiff story; far too easy; minor glitches throughout.

Final Verdict
A strong title. Kids will love the game and demand to play more while adults may be content with just a single run through.
