A great title that with a little more time cooking, could have really been something special.
What’s just as good as chain-sawing giant aliens in half? How about filling him up with so much lead that his body just turns to mush? Or shooting a set of rockets at his feet so he flies up to heaven and falls straight to hell? What about firing a tactical nuke at a group of scumbags all trying to settle a score, clearing the field of them?
The end is near, something never hard to forget in-game.
Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 3 is just that. Don’t bother with Gears of War references…the similarities end with the Unreal Engine and Epic’s style of humungous burly soldiers covered in muscles and grit. Suffice to say, the former is one of the first thoughts that comes to mind when the developer’s name enters a conversation. And while Gears of War has certainly stirred up quite a ruckus, the second is still the Unreal franchise.
This is because Unreal games are PC games, generally speaking. Sure, there’ve been a few console titles here and there, but they’ve always lacked that oomph that their PC brethren had. Seeing how UT3 is identical on the PC and PlayStation 3, a timed console exclusive, there is plenty to discuss. And as always, it all looks spectacular, something we’ve grown to expect from the Unreal engine.
Behold! The rocket launcher expels blood from the body at tremendous rates!
First and foremost, there is no cross-platform play. While it may be unfair for those using a controller against a keyboard and mouse, that argument can be tossed aside and burned to the ground. The PS3 allows for mouse controls unlike the more senior Xbox 360, but not for games unless the game supports it. UT3 does.
While anyone who bought a PS3 to avoid spending hundreds to thousands of dollars dropped over the years for upgrading their PC’s can now rejoice, there are some blatant differences between the PS3 and PC versions, most notably the fact that the former had to be developed with the SIXAXIS in mind.
The introduction of vehicles has never been so epic. And punny.
The biggest plight stems from how the menu system works. Atrociously, it relies on sub-menus at nearly every turn. This means that there are shortcuts in most screens, but it also means that they’re hard to see and impossible to use with a keyboard. That’s right, a SIXAXIS controller can waste its battery while you play with the keyboard (if you so choose) just to navigate the menu system.
