Even without a keyboard, the menus leave so many blank spots that its easy to forget some of the more enjoyable parts of the UT franchise. Beginners and some intermediate players will find most of their created matches are played with no enhancements, called “Mutators”, simply because the menu system doesn’t blatantly have it listed. Instead, it sits on the bottom of the screen saying “hit triangle/square” to use that menu scheme. This happens all too often, and isn’t the kind of thing one needs to get used to.

Sure, they may have lasers and the ability to incinerate just about anything in its way...

For those more particular to the SIXAXIS, know that it is much slower than using a mouse for movement. Even with the sensitivity adjusted, there really is no comparison…whoever is skilled with a mouse and keyboard on the PS3 will dominate even the best SIXAXIS players. In such a fast paced environment, speed is everything, and the controller just cannot compensate enough to match it. Thankfully there are options to play games with anyone using a keyboard and mouse, SIXAXIS or both.

Lest we forget gameplay, it’s best to remember that the UT series is not known for anything other than its multiplayer. There’s always been a sort of campaign based around fighting in the tournament, but it was just another form of Instant Action. UT3, however, actually put together a story. Gameplay is identical to Instant Action. While it makes sense, the fact that they even bothered may feel like a slap in the face to anyone who’s played a game with substance in the campaign. Really Epic, we didn’t need it, we can practice just fine without it.

For everything else, UT3 is almost a rehash of the previous UT titles. Weapons are nearly all the same, some of the maps are very similar, and gameplay mechanics haven’t changed too much from their roots. A good thing, mind you, though a few slight modifications have been made to get the most out of gameplay.

But if you find the right weapons, they'll make an excellent dent on the pavement.

The addition of vehicles is certainly new to the series, which has been mostly known for being so fast paced that vehicles would just slow it down. The implementation of vehicles to UT3 is done phenomenally. 15 different vehicles to choose from, either from the Necris (the bad Human-destroying aliens) or the Axon, don’t change the pace too much for those who can’t stand having a spare moment to think.

Anyone who doesn’t want a vehicle doesn’t have to worry about it either, as they aren’t extremely necessary or over-powered. The Translocator returns and, as always, is the most enjoyable gun to use for tele-fragging and teleportation. Just to make sure nothing gets too out of hand, there’s a list of memorable weapons, none too new for UT veterans, and they all have secondary functions to really spice things up. And they do just that.
