The Bourne Conspiracy

Finally, a movie-based game that is enjoyable to play.

Games based on movies usually are not fun. They are typically rushed out the door in order to meet a deadline to coincide with the release date of the film they are based on. This normally means that corners need to be cut during testing, or maybe the game is much shorter than it could have been otherwise. The game might even look or play a lot worse than it should if it was given the appropriate amount of development time.

Luckily for The Bourne Conspiracy, it was seemingly not rushed out the door. Its release did not coincide with any of the films it is based on. The game does not seem to suffer from a lack of testing time, nor does it seem like it’s much shorter than it otherwise could have been. In fact, grouping The Bourne Conspiracy with other “movie-games” would be an insult to its developers. So instead, let’s classify it as a third person action game.

Play as the 30 Million dollar weapon in The Bourne Conspiracy

So the game is officially called “Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy” (or The Bourne Conspiracy, for short). It is based loosely on the Bourne world we know from the films. Some cutscenes will be familiar for those of use who have watched the movies, but there are still some differences to be had. For starters, the Jason Bourne you’ll see in the game is not based on the likeness of the actor that played him, Matt Damon. But you’ll still get a likeable character and most likely won’t care that he doesn’t look or sound like Matt Damon anyways.

Even though the cutscenes will remind you of key parts of the movies, it’s not like you’ll be playing through every scene. That could get boring. It’s good that developer High Moon Studios decided not to try to fit every part of all three films into one game. As it turned out, it’s quite fun to relive some of the events of the films and then move on to other tasks. Unfortunately, this mash up of events is hard to follow.

The story is all pieced together with cutscenes in between each mission, but unless you’ve seen the movies you might be left scratching your head. I guess they figured that 100% of their userbase would be fans of the movie. I’m sure the majority of them are, but the game’s story doesn’t make any sense if you can’t fill in the gaps with knowledge from the movies, and that is a flaw that needs to be pointed out. It’s not a showstopper, but it is a minor ding against its review score.

Scenes between missions often remind you of the 3 films.
